Ok so this month is bringing us a couple of big new festivals. Anyone in WA complaining that the eastern states get all the good stuff can now eat their words because honestly we've just had it THROWN at us this year! We've already shot through Big Day Out, Soundwave, Summadayze, Good Vibrations, V Festival and probably several others I can't think of right now. Coming up to this time of year usually we can kiss those big festivals goodbye til summertime. But not this year! May has brought us not only the iconic Euopean music festival Creamfields - the ultimate dance festival with headliners MSTRKRFT and The Bloody Beetroots - but also a new Australian festival Groovin The Moo which brings back Silverchair and Vampire Weekend as headliners. I'll be covering both these shows so if you're in the crowds, keep an eye out for me and my camera and hopefully I'll snap you for our social section! Anyway everyone, have a happy May! Be speaking to ya soon. PEACE.
Many entertainers are suffering with bad websites & don't even know it! If you only use a PC with XP and Internet Explorer, is someone with a Mac & running Safari seeing the same thing? Performers are investing vast amounts of cash on badly constructed websites, that fail to perform on various browsers or mobile devices. Are these the problems that you want your fans, promoters, agents or media to see?

My Chemical Romance outgrown the its “emo” pidgeon hole with its new CD and is showing the world that they do indeed have their feet planted firmly in the rock genre. You only have to have a listen to their remake of Bob Dylan's 'Desolation Row' to know there is no mistake, they are a rock band.

I'm not a fan of remakes, but they have taken this song & turned it on it's ear. The music video to go with it is nothing to sneeze at either. We are taken into the darkness, while being brought into the light too.

Be sure to check it out! Desolation Row is featured in the upcoming blockbuster Watchmen, about a team of disaffected superheroes.

They've sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and scored four previous nominations including their 1989 Blow Up Your Video & the 1994 Highway to Hell, however, the band is yet to win a Grammy.

This year AC/DC were nominated in the best rock performance by a duo or group category for the song Rock N Roll Train.

But ... AC/DC were facing steep competition with Coldplay [Violet Hill], Eagles (Long Road out of Eden), Radiohead (House of Cards) and Kings of Leon (Sex on Fire).

And the winner was.....
Kings Of Leon [Sex On Fire]

Better luck next time guys!

The MusicOz Awards have just flown past leaving several hardworking unsigned bands with a bit more recognition and a wallet full of new contacts. The level of talent Australia has produced is obvious when you see that even the ones you don't hear on the radio every day are out there making quality music. And they're all so friendly! I think Australia wins points for keeping their heads together despite the industry. So Long Safety were a lovely bunch who have revealed they are about to swing in a different direction and they were more than happy to chat about it. Torn Asunder were keen to talk about their newest album being put together which will feature much tighter playing, according to the guitarist. Nucleus were also in their talking about the theories riding behind their music.

Juke Kartel, despite the rough looking exterior, proved to be a great group of guys who we can probably expect to be interviewing soon now that their debut album is put together. Its always good to see when victims of reality TV 'fame' can come out the other side and prove they have what it takes to tackle the world music scene on their own terms. People might remember Toby Rand from the reality TV show Rockstar Supanova when he came in third place. While the two that stayed on longer than him seem to have disapeared into obscurity with releases that barely rate a mention, Rand is working hard with the band hes stayed strong with for the past eight years.

Bryanna Carpenter, up for best pop artist this year, was a previous finalist for Australian Idol and has taken the experience and used it to produce a stellar album which will be released next year. These are the people to look out for and hopefully for some it will be a chance to be signed eventually or to propel their independant success.

There will be more posted soon about the awards including photos, interviews and audio files so keep and eye out.
Cheers!

Hello all!
So I've just received an invitation to this years Musicoz Awards in Sydney so we should hopefully be able to get some coverage on it if all goes to plan for late next week.

Got a few people performing including COG who I haven't had the luck to see live yet so it should be a good night all round I'm guessing.

In the meantime I'm after some people to write content for me while the going is busy! Or even after that I could always do with a few extra hands/minds.

If there is anyone out there with a flair for writing who has a keen interest in music and who would like to get there name out there in the name of entertainment reporting definitely flick me an email at otb@onthebarrier.com and I will hook you up.
Thanks to all who have been supportive of On The Barrier so far, it has been through a fair few glitches (as expected with a new site) and we're looking to have a lot more content on there soon.

Keep an eye out for interviews from Lagwagon, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Teenagers and Operator Please.
Cheers guys!!

British India and the Novocaines

Reluctantly I headed out to the British India gig at the Players Bar on Thursday, knowing full well that the lighting and sound was going to hamper what could have been a great concert. However there was an unexpected highlight to the night in the support band The Novocaines. With a sound reminiscent of The Vines and a stage presence which channels Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Novocaines burst onto the scene unfortunately to a less than lackluster crowd. Not to be disheartened the band were a great live act through to the final blow. British India got the crowd a bit rowdier but even they couldn't produce much in the way of a mosh pit from the seven or so people that attended. Kudos to them however for putting on an energetic live show despite the small crowd. Singer Declan Melia never fails to charm as he belts out his poppy tunes and the rest of the band are just too cool as they effortlessly put out their eclectic brand of punk/pop music. Mandurah is attracting some truly awesome bands of late, one would just hope the population catches on soon before they get a bad reputation for poor crowd quality.

Beating the all familiar track through Perth city to the Dillenger Escape Plan concert, I was a little aprehensive about having my head caved in by the lead singers brutal stage antics.

To avoid this, and the risk of missing the concert due to unconsciousness, I hung toward the back of the crowd with an impeded, but safer view of the math-core band.

The safety measure proved effective as the band threw themselves full force into Fix Your Face while at the same time throwing themselves full force into the crowd without once missing note.

I watched in awe as the two guitarists hung from the scaffolding and launched into the middle of the crowd before being thrown back on stage and bouncing off the walls all the while keeping their music at an even pace.

Never have I seen such an intense stage act.

Dillinger Escape Plan have a little something we like to call awesomeness and it really is something every band should have.
Unless a band has such great music that it's worth hearing live, they should at least give us something good to look at.

Watching such a chaotic scene made me realise the sheer intensity of the music - something that couldn't have been captured had the musicians been standing on the spot for more than a few seconds.
